There it is. The menu, filled with all the good things to eat. Breakfasty things like Avo Toast infused with roasted bell peppers and pickled onions and lunchy items like a 6-hour slow roasted lamb sandwich with house-made honey mustard mayonnaise. Just sayin’…
Of course, there is also the pastry tray, longer than your arm and packed full of treats made from chocolate, caramel, even cardamon. But, what really caught our eye on this breakfast morning was the kerfuffle waffle filled with triple berry and mascarpone mousse. Oh, and don’t forget the house made granola sprinkled over top.
Hohl, a cool cafe on the western edge of Old Town Toano, is hopping. From 7am when the staff flips the sign to open, till 4pm when they close, Hohl is full. With an enthusiastic community and spirit to match, the delicious food, sunny interior and shelves filled with plants and books, offers the perfect spot for the great conversations taking place over the most decadent mochas and butterscotch flavored coffees. Hohl’s arrival has brought a new anchor to the sleepy town of Toano and a bustle of new shoppers to it’s weekly Saturday farmer’s market.
So, back to the menu and the Kerfuffle over what to choose, I realize, it doesn’t have to be just one thing. Maybe I order a kerfuffle waffle with a Dingo coffee of honey, cinnamon and vanilla to dine in and take a cinnamon roll (topped with so much frosting I can hardly wait) to go.
At Hohl, everything is prepared fresh daily from quality ingredients in the cafe kitchen. For such a seemlingly small location, it is wonder that so much goodness is packed in. Take, for example, the poached chicken quinoa and butternut squash bowl topped with cashew sauce or the roasted eggplant ratatouille topped with a slice of brie. A dream!
Each dish is even more fantastic than the one before, making Hohl the perfect place for both breakfast and lunch and to reconnect with friends and family. While you are there, don’t forget to take something home for later, like a cinnamon roll… That is, of course, unless I just bought the last one.
